3G: Another Business opportunity for Bollywood


Whenever it comes to the entertainment using mobile, it is only Bollywood which rules in the heart of Indians. 

Since in 2G technology entertainment using mobile was limited, Bollywood could only cash with its music and songs. But as 3G is getting hotter by the day in India, Bollywood sees another great opportunity of business with telecom operators.

Telecom operators are already categorised it's value added services from Bollywood to m-VAS, they are looking for high returns from m-VAS. With the launch of 3G and IPTV, users will be able to watch online Videos, movies on its mobile from anywhere in the country. This will help content providers sell their content on mobiles; it will also help operators to generate high data traffic as well as high penetration in India. 

According to a report, the mobile entertainment industry in India will be worth $4.9bn in 2015, up from $1.2bn in 2009, growing at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 26%. 

Another report reveals that the Mobile VAS industry is expected to touch Rs 100,000 crore by 2020 from Rs 15,000 Crore now with the launch of 3G, Mobile Broadband Services & Rural VAS fuelling this growth, content developers are burning the midnight oil to come up with better and newer concepts and services. 

Recently Shemaroo Acquired Mobile Rights Of Bigg Toss a TV reality show and was exclusively offered to TATA Docomo’s 3G subscribers. Indiatimes 58888 Acquired World Wide Exclusive Mobile & Internet Rights of Sarthak Music.  

Production houses like JMD Telefilms have also jumped into MVAS Industry. Whereas online content distributors like 1takemedia are coming up with innovative business models. According to 1takemedia, they will distribute the content online on mobile and will share the revenue with producers based on a particular business model.

 Some of the production houses also started converting their content to mobile compatible and making mobile content library with reducing data size. 

With the launch of cheaper Smartphones, the reach of Bollywood content will be high between the users and will create a win- win situation to everyone right from telecom operators, content distributers, and film producers to end consumers.

  1. hi i liked the way u explained the opportunities lying in the 3g,as i am doing project on monetisation of content with 3g in India it would be better if u give some more in-depth thought on business model and opportunities lying in films,music and e-newspaper and also some valuable suggestions.thank u.
